Whiskeytown Lake is a man-made reservoir completed in 1963. The lake is fed mostly by the Trinity River water that is tunneled over and through the mountains. The lake is also fed by three local creeks which provide spawning habitat for its world class kokanee salmon population. Whiskeytown Lake is also home to a variety of species including rainbow trout, king salmon, and largemouth bass. The dam itself sits six miles west of Redding and stands about 282 feet high. Whiskeytown Lake boasts 36 miles of shoreline and offers many campsites, beaches, and state of the art recreational facilities including RV camping, store, marina, floating restrooms, and great fish cleaning stations. The fishing is good throughout the summer months and is a fantastic family summer destination. Although Whiskeytown Lake offers a variety of game fish, anglers from all over the country travel here to try their hand at some of the best kokanee salmon fishing the state has to offer.
