Summer run steelhead are in the Trinity River, but not in large enough number to get me too exited. As we move through the month of August, more Trinity River steelhead will arrive, the spearhead of the Fall run. It’s during mid to late August where I start to see more and more anglers on the Trinity River showing up to catch warm weather, wet wading and fly fishing for steelhead.
At any rate, I am seeing them and catching a few while we are salmon fishing.
The flows are pretty high but will be dropping in August then again in October.
The King Salmon are here, we have had a strong summer run of King Salmon this year!
With plenty of water and high flows, the deep holes are plugged with fish on the early morning bite.
Back bouncing roe or pulling plugs are working great on the conventional side.
Bobber fishing is also producing good numbers of fish as well.
Some summer run steelhead head have been moving in but not at a constant rate. At this time, it’s just a few weeks early to really start talking about steelhead.
On of August 8th, the flows on the Trinity will drop causing the King Salmon bite to slow down. Keep in mind this may be our last chance to fish these summer run salmon this year so please don’t hesitate to book your last minute trip for trinity river salmon! Do it today!!
With a ton of water moving and fresh eggs in the river from spawning summer run salmon my hot fly has been egg patterns and my always favorite a simple pegged bead has been a solid producer.
Best Lure: Pegged 8mm bead in tangerine orange
Best Fly: Orange and Shrimp Pink yarn eggs tied on a #8 X510 hook or similar.
